Two New Academic Unions In Nigeria Amid Ongoing Lecturer Strike

The government has presented certificates of registration to two more academic unions that will operate at universities. The unions are the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).

CONUA has been lobbying for federal government recognition as a union in the university system, to counter the influence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has been on strike for almost eight months, since February 14, 2022.

ASUU declared a "total and indefinite" extension of its industrial action, noting that the government has failed to satisfactorily meet its demands. The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities, and academic autonomy among other demands. The union is also accusing the Nigerian government of insensitivity, and of peddling lies.
