Angola's Isabel Dos Santos Says She's 'Not Hiding'

Angolan Isabel dos Santos, daughter of late president Jose Eduardo dos Santos and once considered the richest woman in Africa by Forbes Magazine - told Deutsche Welle in a Skype interview that she is "not hiding" from authorities in Angola.

Dos Santos has been implicated in corruption, after it was revealed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in 2020 that she built her estimated U.S.$2 billion fortune on the back of insider deals with the help of shell companies and an array of western lawyers, accountants and wealth managers.

The United States also sanctioned Dos Santos in 2021 for her involvement in significant corruption - marking the first public U.S. response to years of accusations of wrongdoing.

In November 2021, her brother, José Filomeno dos Santos, was sentenced by the Angolan Supreme Court to five years imprisonment for fraud.
