Nigeria Abolishes English For First 6 Years of Primary Education

The government has approved a policy aimed at promoting the teaching of primary school pupils in local languages rather than in English.

The policy stipulates that instruction for the first six years in primary schools will be in the mother tongue.

Education Minister Adamu Adamu said that even though the policy has officially taken effect, it can only be fully implemented when the government develops instructional materials and qualified teachers are engaged. He said the mother tongue to be used in each school will be the dominant language spoken by the community where it is located.

English is Nigeria's official language and all learning institutions use it as the common language of teaching and learning.
