Namibian Parliamentarians Accuse President of Being Out of Touch

In the wake of a state of the nation address (Sona) by President Hage Geingob, parliamentarians and analysts have accused the nation's leader of being out of touch with the reality regarding issues including unemployment, poverty and inequality, The Namibian reports.

Geingob has been accused of focusing on the same issues for the past eight years with no real solutions being offered, as well as failing to produce tangible solutions to the socio-economic challenges facing the country during his Sona.

Namibia faces a high uneomployment rate of 21.27%, projected to rise to 22.5% by 2024, according to Trading Economics. Meanwhile, the nation is also one of the driest countries south of the Sahara, having experienced persistent drought for over seven years, according to a report by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Corruption has also made headlines, most recently in the form of the Fishrot scandal where multiple businessmen and government officials have been tied to schemes of manipulating lucrative fishing quotas in return for financial kickbacks.
