New 'High Seas' Treaty Crucial for Global Climate Action

The UN adopted a marine biodiversity agreement for the high seas, providing protection from pollution and unsustainable fishing. It aims to clean up oceans, manages fish stocks sustainably, addresses climate change impacts, and support the 2030 Agenda. This landmark achievement ensures the survival of our seas for future generations.

The agreement provides fresh protection beyond borders for the high seas, which are currently not subject to the same level of conservation and sustainability measures as waters under national jurisdiction. The agreement recognizes the importance of capacity building and the transfer of marine technology to help countries manage fish stocks more sustainably.

It also addresses the urgent concerns of global heating and ocean acidification and provides guidance on how to build ecosystem resilience to these threats.
