Fuel Hike Protests Spark Police Crackdown in Angola

Taxi drivers, street sellers, and young activists have been protesting against fuel price increases, the banning of street vendors, and new rules for non-profit organisations, writes Antonio Cascais for Deutsche Welle.

Angola has experienced a surge of protests after the government's decision to reduce fuel subsidies in the face of falling oil prices. The decision was made in an effort to cut government spending, but has led to dramatic increases in fuel prices. A number of taxi drivers were among the thousands of people who took to the streets of capital Luanda and other towns.

Angola's opposition party has decried authorities' heavy-handed response to protests, saying 11 people have so far been killed.
