Sudanese Army Chief Calls for Mobilisation of Civilians

Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and president of the Sovereignty Council, Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, has called for a "general mobilisation" of all young and capable people to join the army to fight against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Radio Dabanga reports.

In a nationwide speech on Tuesday June 27, 2023, the military leader said that the country was "exposed to a conspiracy aimed at tearing its fabric". He accused the RSF of using mercenaries to carry out crimes against the Sudanese people and accused the former deputy president of the Sovereignty Council and RSF leader, Lt Gen Mohamed 'Hemedti' Dagalo, of hijacking the country "for his personal interests".

A 24-hour ceasefire deal agreed in Sudan on the eve of the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday was breached on Wednesday June 28, 2023 amid ongoing violence between the country's army and the rival RSF.

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Tuesday June 27, 2023 that humanitarian needs have soared among people displaced by fighting in Sudan, with the number of those fleeing expected to surpass projections while aid access remains extremely uncertain. Based on the continuing violence, the UN agency now expects that its previous estimate of one million refugees will be surpassed.

The explosion of ethnic violence in Darfur, largely by nomadic Arab groups in alliance with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) who have been battling national army forces for control of the country since mid-April 2023, has led tens of thousands of civilians to flee into neighbouring Chad, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) said on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
