Tanzania, UAE Partner to Triple Dar Es Salaam Port Revenue

The Tanzania government has highlighted a number of benefits to be obtained after parliament endorsed the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) between Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), focusing on social-economic partnerships for developing and improving the performance of ports in the country.

The IGA was signed on February 28, 2022 between the implementation institutions that are Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and the DP World.

The benefits of the partnership include improvements in the efficiency of operations at the Port of Dar es Salaam that will lead to an increase of its annual revenue collection from U.S.$2.9 billion to U.S.$10.7 billion.

Government Chief Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa said the partnership with the Dubai-based DP World Company will see an increase in the number of ships docking at the Dar es Salaam port from 1,569 in 2021/22 to 2,950 vessels by 2032/33. The government will also benefit from upgrading the storage facilities to handle all types of cargo, Msigwa said.
