Senegal's President Macky Sall Rules Out Third Term Bid

Senegal's President Macky Sall on July 3, 2023, ruled out running for a third term in office. This announcement is expected to end widespread speculation that he would seek re-election despite a two-term limit.

Uncertainty about the president's intentions has led to a year of unrest and occasionally violent protests in the typically peaceful West African country.

Sall, elected president in 2012 and 2019, is constitutionally limited to two terms. Despite this, his supporters had argued that a 2016 constitutional change reset his term count, positioning him to run in the 2024 presidential polls.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has praised Sall's announcement. In a statement Blinken said, "We believe that free and fair elections and transitions of power yield stronger institutions and more stable and prosperous countries. President Sall's clear statement sets an example for the region, in contrast to those who seek to erode respect for democratic principles, including term limits."
