Niger Republic, China In Talks For Uranium Mining Venture

The West African nation of Niger and China have been discussing deals that include an industrial park, an oil pipeline and a uranium mine, Hamid Mahmud reports for Voice of America.

Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum said on his social media account, that the Chinese ambassador to Niger, Jiang Feng, said his country would build an industrial park that would impact industries including agro-food, manufacturing, mining and real estate. The deals have been made as a result of the China-Niger Investment Forum held in April 2023.

China and Niger's assocation has grown since the mid 2000s. In 2016, China assisted the country with funds for several development projects. China also assisted the country with its crude oil pipeline project that began in 2008. At the end of 2014, Niger was producing and processing 2.44 million tons of crude oil, turning from an oil importing country into a surplus oil exporting country.

Some civic groups in Niger oppose the plan to mine uranium, warning that mining poses environmental dangers.
