Dozens Killed In Building Collapse In Cameroon

Cameroon's President Paul Biya has ordered the demolition of poorly constructed, illegal houses in the port city of Douala, the country's largest city and economic hub, Voice of America reports. The order came after a four-story building collapsed, killing at least 33 people, including four children. Rescue workers are still digging through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors.

Jerry Chifamba for AllAfrica reports that the four-storey building collapsed on to a smaller structure on Sunday July 23, 2023 . According to locals, the incident happened around midnight and emergency personnel did not respond until the early hours of the morning. An investigation is under way.

In a building collapse in Douala in 2016, five people died in similar circumstances, with officials blaming poor state of repair and potential breaches of construction standards. Local officials identified 500 buildings at risk of collapsing in June of that year.
