Critics of Tanzania Govt's UAE Ports Agreement Lose In Court

The High Court on Thursday, August 10, 2023 dismissed the petition by four citizens who were challenging the Inter-governmental Agreement (IGA) between Tanzania and the UAE. The partnership was for performance development and improvement of sea and lake ports in Tanzania, writes Faustine Kapama for Tanzania Daily News.

This follows a report by Human Rights Watch on August 7, 2023 that authorities detained or threatened at least 22 people since June 10, 2023, including protesters, after they criticised the Tanzania National Assembly's ratification of an agreement for the management of Tanzania's ports.

Amnesty International has called on Tanzanian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Willibrod Slaa, former parliamentarian and Tanzanian Ambassador to Sweden, Boniface Mwabukusi, a lawyer and activist, and Mdude Nyagali, a political activist, all of whom were arrested between 12 and 13 August for criticizing a port deal between Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
