Nigeria's Atiku, Obi Challenge Tinubu's Victory at Supreme Court

Barely two weeks after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal upheld Bola Tinubu's victory in the February 25, 2023 polls, the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party candidate Peter Obi have filed appeals with the Supreme Court to nullify the judgment.

Atiku and his party, have filed 35 grounds of appeal, arguing that the lower court committed "grave error and miscarriage of justice" in its findings and conclusion. The notice of appeal is also asking the Appeal Court to to set aside the entire findings and conclusions of the Tribunal on the grounds that they did not represent the true picture of the grounds of his petition.

Obi, on the other hand, faulted the September 6 judgement on 51 grounds. In his notice of appeal, Obi said the Presidential Election Petitions Court erred in law and thereby reached a wrong conclusion when it dismissed the petition he lodged to challenge the outcome of the presidential election. Obi argued that the tribunal judges made a mistake when they ruled that the petitioners had not specified the exact polling units where the alleged irregularities and malpractice took place, or the specific number of votes that they claimed had been suppressed, deflated, or inflated.

No date has been set for the hearing.
