Grant Payments - South African MPs Grill Social Security Agencies

The Department of Social Development (DSD) has told MPs that it does pay all grant beneficiaries on time. This is despite recent pay glitches, GroundUp reports.

On Wednesday October 11, 2023, the Auditor-General presented the 2022/23 annual reports for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the department. The audit found that R39 million had been irregularly spent. The main contributing issue was with SASSA and the payment of social grants.

MPs on parliament's portfolio committee on social development criticised the department and SASSA for not taking full responsibility for payment delays.

Pensioners waited hours to collect their October social grants at some places in Cape Town, though on the whole the payments seemed to be going more smoothly, GroundUp reports. In Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, some elderly people spent days queueing for their money as a payout point ran out of cash this week, Daily Maverick reports.

In September 2023, thousands of social grant beneficiaries did not receive their money on time due to a technical glitch with PostBank. In response to reports of problems in October, Postbank denied any problems with pension payouts in the Eastern Cape.

The South African Post Office was offered the contract to pay social grants to over 17 million recipients after a court ruled that the contract for the previous service provider, NET1, ended in April 2018.
