No Peace Deal For Ethiopia, Oromia Region Yet

The latest talks between the Ethiopian government and the Oromia Liberation Army (OLA) hosted by Tanzania, has once again not yielded any results. This after days of on-and-off reports of a stalemate over key substantive issues in the peace talks, which kicked off in off with senior military officials of the two sides. It belies the mediation team's report of "positive progress" on November 7, 2023.

According to Reuters, Redwan Hussien, the national security adviser to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on social media site X: "Due to the intransigence of the other party, the talks have come to an end without an agreement."

The commander of the OLA, Kumsa Diriba, popularly known as Jaal Marroo, is reportedly on board for the talks.

Addis Standard reports that both the Ethiopian government and the OLA started to signal the move in October 2022 to resolve the war that has destroyed countless lives and caused immeasurable destruction in the Oromia region. Oromia is a regional state in Ethiopia and the homeland of the Oromo people.
