Ethiopia's Oromia State Erupts In Protest After Militia Attacks

Ethiopian opposition party, the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), says Oromia state "has entered into... a devastating war and great political crisis", while the overall political crisis in the country has reached its peak. The party has called for a comprehensive peace approach to solve the deepening crisis in Oromia.

Oromia is a regional state in Ethiopia and the homeland of the Oromo people. Attacks occurred on November 25 and 29, 2022 in the Kiremu and Gida Ayana districts in the East Wollega Zone - which local authorities and fleeing residents attribute to "Fano militia" from the neighbouring Amhara region. Dozens of people have been killed and thousands have been displaced, writes Addis Standard.

The Ethiopia government has been in conflict since November 3, 2020 with the Tigray region, following attacks on Ethiopian military camps. This conflict also caused the displacement of thousands fleeing the conflict, while thousands more lost their lives.

Peace negotiations between the two warring parties were held recently in South Africa, ending the conflict on November 3, 2022. The conflict led to food shortages at refugee camps and calls by the Ethiopian government for aid and assistance from international organisations.
