South African President Asks Hague Court to Probe Israel War

In a state visit to Qatar, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa had taken steps towards laying a formal complaint with the International Criminal Court against the Israeli government over its war with Hamas.

This comes after 500 South African Jews called for a ceasfire between Israel and Palestine in an open letter which also demanded "the release of all hostages and detainees unjustly held both in Gaza and in Israeli prisons".

Previously, a pro-Israeli protest at the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town on November 12, 2023, was disrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters, GroundUp reports. Buses of protesters for Israel were sent away after the police started using stun grenades and water cannons to disperse a group of the counter-protesters for Palestine. The protests come less than a month after several thousand pro-Palestine demonstrators marched in Cape Town in a show of solidarity with the people of Palestine and Gaza.

South Africans have called for an end to Israel's attacks on Palestinian civilians.
