U.S. Agency Resumes Food Aid In Ethiopia Following Reforms

"The U.S. remains committed to delivering life-saving aid to those in need", Jessica Jennings, the spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa has said.

This follows a decision by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to restart its food assistance in Ethiopia, to regions like Tigray, where thousands of people have been impacted after fleeing the war between Ethiopian forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front.

The USAID and the World Food Programme suspended food aid in April 2023, following allegations that food was being diverted from millions of the most needy people in refugee camps.

Over the last several months, the United States has engaged in significant diplomatic engagement and negotiation, resulting in widespread and substantial reforms of the food assistance structure by the Government of Ethiopia and our humanitarian partners, Jennings said.
