Mozambique Ruling Party Dismisses Graca Machel's Crisis Remarks

Ludmila Maguni, the spokesperson for the ruling Frelimo Party of Mozambique, has downplayed the concerns expressed by Graca Machel, the former minister of education, on what she saw as a dire situation inside the party. In a letter released on November 14, Machel, who was married to Samora Machel, the nation's first president - wrote that the Party's apparatus "has been captured by a handful of members who are responsible for the erosion and perversion of what it means to be in Frelimo."

The Mozambican Liberation Front, known by its Portuguese abbreviation Frelimo, is currently facing one of its toughest tests after foreign observers expressed alarm over possible tampering with the results of municipal elections held on October 11, 2023. The voting and counting that saw the governing party win all but one of Mozambique's 65 municipalities alarmed the governments of the U.S., the UK, and the European Union, among others.
