Peacekeeping Efforts Increased As DR Congo - Rwanda Tensions Rise

With tension growing between the Democractic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, both the East African Community and the Biden administration have stepped up diplomatic efforts to avert further conflict.

Defence Forces chiefs from the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) States convened on November 24 to discuss the next steps for the Nairobi Process on the restoration of peace the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This follows an agreement to authorize deployment of Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops in eastern DR Congo where stepped-up activities by armed groups are forcing civilians from their homes and claiming many lives.

On November 19, President Biden dispatched the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Avril Haines, to Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), along with Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee and Special Assistant to the President and NSC Senior Director for African Affairs Judd Devermont.
