Seychelles Mops Up After Heavy Flooding, Explosion on Main Island

President Wavel Ramkalawan of the Seychelles declared an end to the state of emergency following heavy flooding and an explosion at a quarrying company on the main island of Mahe.

Over 200 people were evacuated and housed in temporary shelter by local businesses and individuals. Several people died, while over 170 have been hospitalised.

The public's response was praised, with many offering aid.

The December 7 Disaster Fund was announced for donations in multiple currencies. An investigation into the explosion has begun to determine its cause and identify alternative storage for explosives.

The floods are the latest in a series of climate shocks recorded in 2023 off the East African coast. Flooding, landslides and drought occurred across Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Somalia and Tanzania, AllAfrica reports.

President Wavel Ramkalawan said the police are now investigating the cause of the explosion at the CCCL storage facility at Providence.
