Niger Junta Rejects Ecowas Offer on Sanctions If Bazoum Freed

The head of Niger's armed forces declined to free the country's ousted president Mohamed Bazoum in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, according to BBC reports, writes Jerry Chifamba for AllAfrica.

The offer was made during a conference on December 10 by Ecowas, the (Economic Community of West African States). Bazoum's family said that after his unsuccessful escape attempt on October 19, they have not heard from him.

Ecowas on Sunday, December 10, 2023 resolved to set up another committee to negotiate with the junta. This makes it at least the third committee set up by the regional body to negotiate with the military rulers who ousted Bazoum in a coup in July, 2023.
