Tshisekedi Seen in Lead as Campaigning Starts in DR Congo

Elections are scheduled to take place on December 20th in Africa's second-largest country by land mass, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi is seeking a second term, along with some 25 other candidates including Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Denis Mukwege; Martin Fayulu, who is considered by many to have won in 2018; and the former governor of copper-rich Katanga region, Moise Katumbi.

"The most underrated man in African politics could soon be re-elected in the DRC," veteran journalist Phillip van Niekerk, says of Tshisekedi in an article for Daily Maverick. Historian Reuben Loffman, in an article for The Conversation, says Tshisekedi's first tenure "has been decidedly mixed", while also pointing to successes, including the joining the East African Community and "a modest upturn in economic growth since the pandemic." The voting takes place against the backdrop of rising conflict in easter Congo and growing tensions between DR Congo and its eastern neighbor, Rwanda.
