South African Motorists Warned on Wet Weather After Fatal Floods

The Road Traffic Management Corporation has advised motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving in rainy conditions following a forecast of heavy rains by the South African Weather Service. This comes after flash floods near the town of Ladysmith in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) killed at least six people with 11 others missing.

KZN Premier Dube-Ncube sent her condolences to the families of those killed in the floods in a statement on social media, saying the heavy rains "resulted in the Bellspuit river, which runs under the Mbonothu bridge, bursting its banks, causing water to overflow onto the N11 road near the Limit Hill robots, in Ladysmith Town".

KZN's latest deluge mark another climate emergency for the embattled province which saw at least 435 people killed in April 2022 following heavy flooding.
