Liberia Takes Stock of Lagging Fish Sector

Liberia is seeking to industrialise its fisheries sector to provide socio-economic growth, FrontPage Africa reports. The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority Director General Emma Glassco says the lack of scientific data has undermined the performance of Liberia's fishery sector.

The Liberian government has commissioned the assistance of a Moroccan research vessel to undertake the data collection.

Fishing in African waters has been negatively impacted by illegal fishing by Asian and European vessels and has seen dwindling stocks for local consumption. It is also impacting the livelihoods of small fishers who are being muscled-out of the industry by bigger fishing conglomorates.
