South African Artist Esther Mahlangu Gets Landmark Retrospective

A major exhibition celebrating the life and work of South African artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu has opened at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town.

Curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective showcases over 50 years of Mahlangu's career, featuring paintings, historic photographs, a short film, and her iconic BMW Art Car. The exhibition highlights her unique style that blends traditional Ndebele art with contemporary forms and explores themes of cultural identity, resilience, and artistic expression.

After it runs in Cape Town, the exhibition will travel to Johannesburg and then the U.S.
