Africa Tackles Rising Obesity with Joint Initiative

The African Union (AU) Commission, in collaboration with WHO and UNICEF, observes World Obesity Day, focusing on the theme "Let's Talk About Obesity and..." endeavoring to be a part of the global response to the obesity crisis.

The AU aims to contribute to the global response to the obesity crisis, particularly addressing the rising rates in African children and adolescents. Almost one in three of the world's overweight children under five reside in Africa, with obesity doubling among those aged five to 19 in the past 16 years.

The AU Commission, WHO, and UNICEF are conducting a communication campaign to raise awareness, emphasizing the severe health risks associated with obesity, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The AU Member States are committed to addressing the issue through policies outlined in the AU Agenda 2063 and the Africa Regional Nutrition Strategy.
