The Gambian Parliament Considers Lifting Ban on FGM

Although the World Health Organisation has continuously warned of the serious health risks associated with FGM, many countries have struggled to end the practice. The Gambian parliament is now considering lifting a ban imposed in 2015 by the previous administration. Some MPs have said declaring the practice illegal is an "attack" on cultural and religious freedoms. "We cannot allow them to arrest and imprison our mothers and our grandmothers because they practice their cultural beliefs", a local cleric said, referring to Western nations.
