Sudan's People Grapple With 'Hell on Earth, Imminent Death'

The U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, has said he is looking to harness the different peace initiatives on the war-torn nation to bring an end to the violence and create a humanitarian corridor.

Meanwhile the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has issued a "stark warning" about the devastating impact of the ongoing war in Sudan, set to enter its second year in April.

With about 24 million children on the brink of what could become a "generational catastrophe", the CRC documented numerous atrocities since the conflict began in April 2023. These include reports of rape, denial of humanitarian access, and violations of children's economic and social rights. Nearly 14 million children urgently need humanitarian aid, 19 million lack access to education, and four million are displaced. The situation has led to acute shortages of food, clean water, healthcare, and medicines.

The Committee called on Sudan's government to immediately take all urgent and necessary measures to end the severe violations and fulfill its commitments under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as to cooperate with the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, established by the Human Rights Council in October 2023.
