Chadian Court Bars Opposition Leaders From Upcoming Election

The Constitutional Court has rejected the applications of 10 presidential opponents to military leader Nassour Mahamat Idriss Deby who were hoping to participate in the upcoming presidential election - including three of his main rivals. The court attributed the decision to "missing or inconsistent documents".

Up to 20 candidates were vying for the presidency, among them the only woman candidate, Ndjelar Koumadji Mariam, who said she's committed to bringing social justice and "ensure parity between men and women".  Chad's opposition and civil society groups have said the elections are taking place at a very difficult time for the country after the assassination of opposition leader Yaya Dillo, who many regarded a much stronger opponent to Deby.
