South Africa's Drug-Resistant TB Fight Stalling - Report

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) evaluated efforts to bring drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) treatment closer to patients in KwaZulu-Natal's King Cetshwayo District (KCD).

While some clinics offer DR-TB services, progress is slow. MSF urges prioritizing care for children and those with severe DR-TB in local clinics. Patients face hardship traveling long distances for treatment, and clinics lack resources and trained staff.

Despite being preventable and treatable, the disease claimed the lives of over 50,000 people in 2022, according to the World Health Organisation. MSF calls for renewed efforts to improve access across the region and plans to use these learnings to improve access to treatment for other diseases.
