ConCourt Ruling Ends Zuma's Bid to Run in 2024 Elections

South Africa's Constitutional Court has ruled that former president Jacob Zuma cannot run in next week's national elections, upholding the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) decision to disqualify him due to his 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court in 2021.

This decision reverses an earlier Electoral Court ruling and blocks Zuma's candidacy for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Despite Zuma's argument that a remission reduced his effective sentence to three months, the judges rejected this claim.

President Cyril Ramaphosa supported the ruling, emphasizing the importance of respecting the rule of law and expressing confidence that the decision would not lead to violence.
