South Africa's Zuma Wins Court Bid to Run in May Election

South Africa's electoral court has overruled a decision by polls authorities to bar 81-year-old former president Jacob Zuma from running in the May 29 elections. The upcoming polls are expected to be the most competitive since the advent of democracy in 1994 and pundits say Zuma's presence in the campaign could prove a key factor. In 2021, the former president who led the country for nearly a decade was handed a 15-month sentence after refusing to testify in a corruption investigation.

The Independent Electoral Commission excluded him from the race last month, saying the Constitution bars anyone sentenced to more than 12 months' imprisonment.
