EACOP Pipeline Critics in Tanzania Face Intimidation, Harassment

The Stop EACOP Coalition has strongly condemned the ongoing harassment and intimidation of people affected by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) in Tanzania.

Five people, including a community leader, were arrested and detained by Tanzanian authorities for talking to journalists about their fears of poor compensation and police intimidation linked to EACOP projects. The individuals were released but faced further questioning.

This comes after a joint press conference held on May 25, Africa Day, by Uganda and Tanzania civil society organizations working with EACOP-affected communities. The coalition calls on the Tanzanian government to immediately stop harassing EACOP-PAPs and uphold their fundamental right to freedom of expression.
