Eritrean Official Who Called Afwerki a 'Dictator' Dies In Prison

The Eritrean government has remained silent on the death in prison of the country's former finance minister, Berhane Abrehe. Although the cause of his death is yet to be established, the government allowed his burial to take place.

Abrehe was arrested in 2018 for saying Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki is a "dictator".

His family said he was neither charged nor allowed family visitations, despite being in frail health. The U.S. State Department had condemned Berhane's long detention.
