South Africans Furious as Power Utility Demands Massive Hike

Eskom has proposed the 36% electricity tariff increase, to take effect from April 2025.

National Energy Regulator (Nersa) has yet to approve Eskom's multi-year price determination, which also covers an 11.81% increase in 2026/27 and a 9.10% increase in 2027/28 - leading to a huge rise in living costs.

The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from the Democratic Alliance, a partner in the Government of National Unity, labeling it "outrageous and unjust". The party warns that the increase would exacerbate economic hardships for households and businesses already under financial stress.
