Zambia's Former President Lungu Barred From Seeking Re-Election

Former President Edgar Lungu has been barred from running for re-election in 2026 as he already served the maximum number of terms allowed by the Constitution.

Lungu was president between 2015 and 2016 after Michael Sata died in office. He was re-elected for a second term from 2016 to 2021. Lungu had argued that this should not be counted since he had not served a full five-year term, but the court disagreed and deemed it a full term.

During his tenure in office, Lungu was accused of corruption, and his wife and other family members face corruption charges in court, which he said is an attempt to prevent him from seeking re-election a third time.
