Departure Of French Troops From Chad Leaves Hundreds Jobless
More than 400 civilians who worked with French soldiers in Chad assembled in the capital N'djamena this week to call on the government to "immediately" give them jobs and provide the benefits they had when they worked with the French.
The last French soldiers departed the country on January 31, 2025, from bases they had occupied for than 70 years, following an order by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno for them to leave.
The former workers held jobs in hospitals, schools and dining facilities that served the troops. Others provided humanitarian assistance to those who lived around the bases. A spokesperson for the group told journalists that at least half of them are currently in "precarious situations" and can no longer support their families.
