Famine Takes Hold in Sudan - UN Launches U.S.$6 Billion Appeal

Famine has been confirmed in more than ten locations in Sudan, according to the World Food Program. Another 17 are said to be "on the brink", as the UN body launches an appeal for U.S.$6 billion to avert a "humanitarian catastrophe" in the war-ravaged nation.

WFP's Executive Director, Cindy McCain, said the civil war killed thousands, uprooted millions, and "yet it's forgotten", despite being "the epicentre of the world's largest and most severe hunger crisis ever".

Aid agencies have continued to highlight the suffering of the Sudanese people since the latest fighting began in 2023, particularly women and girls, who go through "appalling patterns of conflict-related sexual violence", while young men have been forced to fight.

Trucks finally arrived at the famine-stricken Zamzam camp in North Darfur.
