Ramaphosa Weighs Options for U.S. Ambassador After Rasool Returns

President Cyril Ramaphosa is carefully considering the appointment of the next South African ambassador to the U.S. following Ebrahim Rasool's expulsion.

Ramaphosa has received numerous suggestions for potential candidates, and he is taking his time to make the correct choice. This is especially in light of strained diplomatic relations with Washington, said Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

Magwenya said that the absence of an ambassador in Washington did not mean there would be no engagements with U.S. President Donald Trump's administration on various levels. This is especially true since relations between the two countries have been strained over issues including the Expropriation Act and South Africa's legal actions against Israel. Ramaphosa is eager to reset the US-South Africa relationship, especially in terms of trade, where there are many opportunities to strengthen trade ties.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has called for a review of South Africa's foreign policy in light of these tensions.
