Scores Killed During Attacks in Nigeria's Benue State
At least 42 people have been shot dead in a series of attacks across Nigeria's central Benue state. A police spokesperson confirmed the attacks, saying that one of the raids resulted in the death of a police officer who was helping repel the attackers.
The state is situated in Nigeria's Middle Belt, a region where the majority Muslim North meets the largely Christian South. Analysts say competition over land use results in frequent conflicts between herders, who want grazing land for their cattle, and farmers, who need arable land for cultivation.
