Malawi Police Under Fire for Inaction on Political Violence

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Chairperson Gift Trapence has criticised the Malawi Police Service for delays in addressing political violence, and demanding immediate action or accountability.

Trapence questioned the credibility of the police service, accusing it of betraying public trust by failing to follow through on its public commitment to arrest perpetrators of political violence. This comes after Inspector General of Police, Dr. Merlyne Yolamu, promised at a high-profile meeting of the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) that investigations into political violence would be concluded and arrests would follow "soon".

Trapence condemned the police for not being transparent, warning that impunity undermines democracy, particularly as Malawi prepares for its 2025 elections.
