Ethiopia Raises Civil Servants' Salaries As Cost of Living Bites

The government has announced it will raise salaries for entry-level workers beginning September 2025, while also increasing the country's minimum wage. In a statement, the Civil Service Commission said the adjustment is part of the government's efforts to mitigate the impact of the rising cost of living in the country.

Labor unions and advocacy groups have long called for salary reforms, including exemptions to higher taxes. Officials have said the new salary scale represents a "balanced approach" that considers workers' welfare and "fiscal sustainability".
