''Peace is health'', asserts World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom in almost every media briefing on global health issues. Dr. Tedros and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilama, Champion of the Global Task Force on Cholera Control, urge policy makers everywhere to curb the spread of the deadly disease - whose most severe outbreaks are in Africa - by investing in sanitation and safe water, reducing poverty and accelerating the production of preventive vaccines.
Conflict is a major contributor to cholera's spread. In an August 31 2025 disease outbreak report, WHO said, ''The global cholera situation continues to deteriorate, driven by conflict and poverty, posing a significant public health challenge across multiple WHO regions.''
The UN Childrens' Fund says over 2000 cases and at least 80 fatalities were reported in Sudan's Darfur area by the beginning of last month and that more than 640,000 children under five in North Darfur alone are at risk, in the Sudanese genocidal proxy war that has caused the world's worst ongoing humanitarian disaster.

Children and adults suffering from cholera receive treatment at an isolation centre in a hospital in Khartoum, Sudan. The situation is particularly alarming in the North Darfur region, where more than 640,000 children are at risk.
