Nine Dead, Dozens Missing in Djibouti Shipwreck

At least nine people are confirmed dead and dozens more are missing after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 320 passengers were on board when the vessel sank. With more than 40 people still unaccounted for, authorities fear the death toll will rise as search-and-rescue efforts continue.

The disaster occurred on March 24 near Obock in northern Djibouti, a critical transit point for migrants attempting to cross the Red Sea toward the Gulf. Shipwrecks are frequent along this corridor, where migration is increasingly driven by economic hardship, conflict, and climate-related pressures across the Horn of Africa.
