Presidency Denies Claims of 'Absent' Malawi Leader

The presidency has refuted reports that President Peter Mutharika shirked key governance responsibilities by delegating his roles to ministers. In an official statement, the government has branded the claims as "regrettable" and "unpatriotic", saying that the president chaired every Cabinet meeting since taking office in September 2025. The government said any attempt to suggest the president pulled back from his duties is an effort to construct an "artificial narrative" of an absent leader.

Addressing critics' concerns over why the president occasionally delegates lower-level officials to represent him at high-profile ceremonies, the presidency said the decision aligns with his austerity measures.
