Africa: IPI Passes Six Resolutions On Threats To Media Freedom

press release

Vienna — Meeting in India on the occasion of the IPI World Congress (26-29 January 2001), the General Assembly of the International Press Institute (IPI) passed six resolutions on the following topics of concern: the increasing use of lengthy suspended jail sentences against journalists; attempts by governments to restrict the movement of journalists; the growing tendency to politicise news and current affairs programming as well as the management of publicly-owned broadcasting systems; the increasing restrictions on public access to, and distribution of, information on the Internet and the manner in which inter-governmental organisations (IGOs) have ignored violations against freedom of opinion and statement in their member states.

All resolutions are posted on IPI's website: http://www.freemedia.at/index1.html
