UBA Foundation, the Social Corporate Responsibility harness of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has donated an ultra-modern cyber café equipped to accommodate 60 persons at a time, to the University of Ilorin, in Kwara state.

Built at the cost of N38million, the cyber café was declared open last week as part of the institution's 2008 convocation ceremony by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Jerry Agada. Dr. Agada who described it as the first of its kind in any Nigerian University, gave kudos to UBA for the trail blazing initiative. He urged the university students to avail themselves of the facilities provided by the café to boost their academic development, stating that this will position them for greater heights in the current technology driven age.

Though the decision to provide the facility for the University of Ilorin is in fulfilment of an earlier pledge made by the management of the bank, it is noteworthy to state that it also aligns with the mandate of UBA Foundation which is to make critical interventions in the 3 areas namely Education Environment and Economic empowerment as part of giving back to the society. This according to Mr. Deolu Ijose, Regional Director-West Central UBA Plc, who represented Group Managing Director, UBA Plc Mr. Tony Elumelu at the occasion, has seen UBA Foundation donate various infrastructural facilities and other items in aid of learning and career development to various institutions of higher learning in the country.

The commissioning of the UniIlorin Cyber café coincided with the formal opening of a full fledged business office of the bank located within the school premises. The business office coupled with the deployment of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at the cyber café premises expectedly will facilitate easy and convenient access to banking services by members of the university community.
