Agricultural Production and Soil Nutrient Mining in Africa

About 75 percent of the farmland in sub-Saharan Africa is plagued by severe degradation, losing basic soil nutrients needed to grow the crops that feed Africa, according to a report by IFDC. Africa's crisis in food production and battle with hunger are largely rooted in this "soil health crisis." The new research shows substantial soil decline in every major region of sub-Saharan Africa, with the highest rates of depletion in Guinea, Congo, Angola, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda, where nutrient losses are more than 60 kilograms per hectare per year.
