Members of Parliament from sugar growing areas are turning the heat on Agriculture Minister Sally Kosgey over a fresh scandal of sugar importation, revealed in today's Daily Nation. The Members led by Professor Ayiecho Olweny say the illegal importation of 25,000 tonnes of sugar was a scheme bent on benefitting some individuals in light of the general elections slated for next year.

The Kenya Revenue Authority is estimated to have lost in excess of 1.6 billion shillings as a result of importation of sugar purportedly from Egypt but in reality sourced from other nations. Egypt is a member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa COMESA and as such sugar imported from that country receives a full waiver on duty.
